Healthcare Outreach in South L.A.

South Central Heals is an accessible, bilingual informational site for community members to learn about and access free healthcare services.

In collaboration with multiple community organizations, county government, and a major healthcare provider, we developed a website and data collection forms for the launch of a million-dollar health outreach project. 

The launch of South Central Heals involved building a website and online survey forms to support a 5-year campaign of door-to-door outreach across South Los Angeles.

This campaign has the goal of providing affordable healthcare and social services to community members, while shaping health and housing policy across L.A. County.

The digital presence of this campaign needed to build trust among the community while ensuring ease of use and accessibility for Spanish-speaking users with limited digital literacy.

The website aggregates resources, shares information, and builds a database of clients, while complying with local and national healthcare regulations. 

User Research

I conducted bilingual research sessions to understand the unique needs of three different user groups:

  1. Community members in South Central, who are eligible to access services

  2. Door-to-door health promoters, who conduct surveys and case management with clients

  3. Nonprofit, health clinic, and county staff

Within these sessions, I nurtured an environment of trust and openness, so the users felt comfortable sharing their opinions and experiences, in their native language, as well as collaborating with their colleagues to ideate and discuss different ideas.

Interactive research sessions included collaboration and knowledge sharing with promotores before they went into the field to collect household data.

Content Design

Research showed that many community members were concerned about sharing their information with unfamiliar entities - they were worried about their immigration status, their lease agreements, and their protection from scams and identity theft.

With this in mind, I developed content that emphasized the trust and reliability of the official partners behind South Central Heals.

→ I developed clear, accessible content for these user groups, in both English and Spanish.

→ I distilled hefty grant reports into infographics, step-by-step breakdowns, and short taglines, while adhering to Los Angeles County messaging guidelines.

→ I drafted a survey that encouraged trust while protecting users from submitting sensitive information.
